Here's our Liverpool FC news roundup for Wednesday, 7th February 2024. Xabi Alonso is the major talk right now.

Xabi Alonso may never even become Liverpool manager but he's certainly the main topic of conversation right now. The Spaniard is going to leave a lot of people disappointed if he doesn't take over...

There's also talk of the Reds' potential budget for whoever does take over, though. It promises to be a massive summer at Anfield, Alonso or not.

Here's our Liverpool FC news roundup.

Alonso tipped for greatness

A former teammate of Xabi Alonso's has tipped the manager for success if he were to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The 42-year-old is the early frontrunner to become the next Reds manager, following Klopp's shock announcement to stand down from his role at the end of the season.

One man who has backed Alonso to do well wherever his career takes him is his former teammate in Bavaria Claudio Pizarro.

“I think he [Alonso] can succeed everywhere he wants to go,” the ex-Peru international told FootballTransfers.

“I think what he is doing at the moment at Leverkusen [is excellent], what he did before at Real Sociedad as well."

Alonso makes history

Xabi Alonso makes history as Bayer Leverkusen boss and is just two games from an all-time German record. He's strongly linked with Liverpool.

Xabi Alonso reportedly tops Liverpool's list as they search for Jurgen Klopp's successor this year. It doesn't exactly take a lot of research to figure out why.

Alonso has Bayer Leverkusen sitting at the top of the Bundesliga right now. They're also among the favourites to win both the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Europa League this season.

All of that is impressive, of course, but the manner in which Leverkusen are doing it takes things to another level. They haven't actually lost a game this season and their win over VFB Stuttgart on Tuesday took their run to 30 games unbeaten.

This is only the second time that's happened in German football history. Bayern Munich went 32 games unbeaten in the 2019/20 season under Hansi Flick, another supposed contender for the job at Anfield.

Reds to provide 'huge budget'

Liverpool are expected to provide a 'huge budget' to their new manager, according to one financial expert. The Reds have work to do in 2024.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has given his take on the finances at Liverpool this summer as they build around a new manager. Jurgen Klopp will leave Anfield at the end of the season, sparking the biggest change at Anfield since 2015.

Maguire believes Liverpool will have the resources to fully back their new boss - principally because of the smart spending under Klopp. There should be a budget that few in the 'top six' can compete with, in fact.

“When it comes to the transfer market, Liverpool have been one of the leading clubs when it comes to spending smart rather than spending big,” Maguire told Football Insider. “They have also been very good at generating money from player sales.

“Put those two factors together, and the new coach in the summer will inherit a huge budget thanks to their flexibility in terms of FFP. That isn’t necessarily matched by their rival clubs in the Big Six."

We're nearly two weeks on from the announcement that sent tremors through the sporting world - where Klopp revealed that after nine seasons at the helm of the club, he would be leaving Liverpool come the end of the campaign.

It was a statement that rocked all Reds fans to their core, not wanting to accept the departure of a man who had taken their club from obscurity to the pinnacle of the sport, winning all that there is to win during his tenure on Merseyside - including a first Premier League title in 30 years.

One man who Klopp oversaw the progression of was Reds vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, from academy prospect to world-beater.

As he comes to terms with the departure of his manager, Alexander-Arnold is beginning to let himself dream about the perfect goodbye.
