Darwin Nunez has been given a five-game international ban alongside four other Uruguay players for their actions in the melee with Colombia fans during the Copa America.

Moments after Uruguay's Copa America semi-final defeat to Colombia, multiple Uruguay players went into the stands to confront Colombian fans who had began brawling in close proximity to the players' families.

Some of the Uruguayan players were seen fighting with the rival fans and later defended their actions as a matter of self-defence and protecting their loved ones from the violence that had broken out.

Darwin Nunez was amongst the players seen in the midst of the brawling, as well as appearing to throw a chair into the stands.

The Liverpool attacker received a five-game suspension from CONMEBOL as well as a £15,000 fine for his actions.

Nunez will now miss his nation's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuala, Peru and Ecuador.

LACK OF SECURITY COMPLAINTS

In the days that followed the melee, numerous Uruguay players took to social media to complain about the lack of security surrounding the semi-final.

Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa was quick to defend his players and believed any sanctions thrown there way by CONMEBOL would be far from right.

"The only thing I can tell you is that the players reacted like any other human being would.

"You see your woman, or your mother, or a baby, being attacked, what would you do? You'd ask whether they're going to punish the people who defended themselves," Bielsa said.

Tottenham Hotspur's Rodrigo Bentancur was another player punished for his involvement with the midfielder being issued a four-game suspension and fined $16,000.

The Copa America final also saw issues with security and massive problems regarding overcrowding.
