Liverpool head coach Arne Slot REVEALS plans for Darwin Nunez

With Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League opener against Ipswich Town less than two weeks away, new boss Arne Slot has been making his view on the Reds’ attacking options known, particularly when it comes to Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan striker has had a busy summer helping his country finish third in the Copa America, and Nunez has only just found himself back at the AXA Training Centre this week, along with his other Liverpool teammates who enjoyed deep runs into summer tournaments such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.

According to Andy Hunter in the Guardian, Slot has been forthright in where he sees Nunez’s best position as being for Liverpool. Despite having played on the left wing for both club and country in the past 12 months, Slot is reportedly far more encouraged by what he sees from Nunez as being “an out-and-out centre-forward”.

With plenty of options on the left hand side of attack such as Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo, not to mention Nunez’s clear capability playing on that flank, Hunter cites this as being the main reason why Liverpool have not been more aggressive in their pursuit of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle after he was offered to the Reds in June.

Arne Slot wants 'smart' striker

We were also given insight into how Slot wants his Liverpool side to use their strikers after Diogo Jota’s good performances in pre-season wins against Arsenal and Manchester United, with the Portuguese forward grabbing an assist in the latter.

Speaking after the Arsenal game, Slot told reporters: “I think that helps to have someone who naturally plays in that position […] it helps if you have a striker who is smart and is intelligent, knows when to make the deep runs [and] knows when to hold the ball.”

Given that Nunez will need time to get back up to speed and adjust to Liverpool’s new way of playing under Slot, it could be that we see healthy competition for the starting striker spot in the first few weeks of the season.
