Gordon NEGOTIATIONS, Kvaratskhelia BOOST, Calafiori FIGHT - Liverpool transfer news today

With the PSR deadline on Sunday night, the transfer action in the Premier League has really perked up.

Though Liverpool have no Financial Fair Play concerns, their interest in Anthony Gordon threatened to suck them into a transfer merry-go-round.

Meanwhile, the Reds have been given a boost in pursuit of another wide forward, while they face competition for a top defender.

Here's our Liverpool FC transfer news recap for Monday 1 July as a raft of player contracts come to an end.

Anthony Gordon move 'unlikely'

Despite talks between the two clubs, Liverpool were unable to complete a move for Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon after they refused to include talented youngster Jarell Quansah in any deal.

Sunday started as being touted as a big day for transfers in England, with Liverpool hinted to be heavily involved as certain clubs desperately attempted to meet Premier League spending rules.

Chelsea, Everton, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United are all potentially in breach of the rules and need to sell players to meet them.

The Daily Mail reported on Saturday that there had been contact from the Magpies offering Anthony Gordon to the Reds, potentially setting up a dramatic 'deadline' day.

However, with Quansah no longer on the table, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool were not expected to meet Newcastle’s demands unless they made a 'crazy' proposal.

Newcastle still lining up Gordon's replacement

That said, Newcastle have reportedly opened talks over a deal for Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga.

Given the Anthony Gordon to Liverpool links, it has been suggested that Newcastle have already identified the perfect replacement should the 23-year-old make a sensational return to Merseyside.

Perhaps the door to a move to Anfield is still open after all.

Reds given Kvaratskhelia boost

Liverpool have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has reportedly turned down an offer from Paris Saint-Germain in favour of a potential move to the Premier League.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the 23-year-old Georgian winger, currently impressing at Euro 2024, turned down the £110-million approach from the French giants as he would like to try his luck in England.

Thiago and Matip officially depart

June 30 is a very important date in the football calendar with a number of players leaving clubs following the expiration of their contracts.

For Liverpool, of course, this meant the official departures of Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip, with Adrian set to follow, too.

The Brazilian was expected to spend the full Premier Division season, which runs from spring to autumn, at the Irish club, but made only six appearances in all competitions since joining in January this year.

Amid a £20million price tag being placed on his head, Van den Berg remains a Liverpool player to date, and it might be a while until he's allowed to depart.

Arsenal in the frame for Calafiori

With Italy's involvement at this summer's European Championships now over, the future of central defender Riccardo Calafiori can be resolved.

Now, Arsenal are in the mix, too.
