Surprise Liverpool transfer target CONFIRMS club approach

Liverpool have started the season well under new head coach Arne Slot, already keeping four clean sheets in their opening six Premier League matches.

The Reds’ defensive stability has been in part thanks to impressive performances from both Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate but both Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher have done their part too.

Although Alisson remains the firm number one choice the Brazilian has already picked up an injury, which saw him miss Liverpool’s league match with Bournemouth and their Carabao Cup tie against West Ham.

Kelleher stepped up and deputised well, making some vital saves to preserve Liverpool’s clean sheet against Bournemouth, but the Irishman is coming off the back of an uncertain summer at Anfield.

One man who had been targeted by Liverpool in case Kelleher were to leave has now opened up on his regret that the move didn’t happen.

Liverpool wanted Anthony Lopes

Legendary Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, who has made 489 appearances for the club, was reportedly a target for Liverpool this summer as they looked to replace the potentially outgoing Kelleher.

According to L’Equipe (Via Get Football News France), Liverpool made an approach for the 34-year-old to become their new back-up goalkeeper in the summer, but Lopes was determined to find a move where he could be the number one.

Now, Lopes has been transfer-listed and told he will not play for Lyon again and he has spoken of his regret.

"Had [Liverpool’s approach] occurred at the end of the transfer window, maybe my choice would have been different,” Lopes told L’Equipe.

Although Kelleher remained at the club this summer, it is unlikely that he will remain beyond this season and Giorgi Mamardashvili is due to become a Liverpool player in the summer of 2025, further complicating Kelleher’s position in the squad.

There has also been doubt around the future of Alisson but the Brazilian is reportedly committed to the club and is likely to remain as Liverpool’s number one for now.

A move for Lopes may have been on this summer but any hopes of an Anfield transfer now seem shot for the 34-year-old, who will be hoping to find a new club as soon as possible.
