Liverpool Next Manager: The date Xabi Alonso could make decision on his future
Liverpool could get an official decision on Xabi Alonso's future by the end of April, with the Bayer Leverkusen manager weighing his options ahead of the summer.
Alonso stands out as the frontrunner to replace Jurgen Klopp, who will stand down as Liverpool boss as the end of the 2023/24 season.
Following Klopp's shock announcement at the start of the year, Alonso quickly became both the bookies' and fans' favourite to take on the role at Anfield.
The 42-year-old's Bayer Leverkusen side remain unbeaten in 2023/24 and are on track for a first-ever Bundesliga title win. They could still also meet Liverpool in this year's Europa League final.
As well being one of Europe's brightest young coaches, Alonso is also well loved on Merseyside for the five years he spent at Anfield as a player between 2004 and 2009, during which time he won both the Champions League and FA Cup.
Along with Liverpool, Bayern Munich are also reportedly keen on making Alonso their next head coach, while Leverkusen chiefs hold out hope that he will continue to lead the club next season.
There have even been claims that Real Madrid could also be interested.
With a battle for Alonso's future brewing, the man himself has stayed coy as he focusses on a potentially historic season at Leverkusen.
Alonso's decision timeline
However, while the priority will be ensuring his side end the campaign as champions, Alonso is bound to be thinking beyond May.
According to the Athletic's Raphael Honigstein, he could even make a decision before the season's climax.
Speaking on The Daily Football Briefing podcast, the journalist suggested a timeframe of the end of April for when Alonso could makes his decision on where he will be at the start of next season.
He said: "My hunch is that these are discussions that are happening now, in the international break, which is a good time for this, and that he will, out of courtesy of all the clubs involved including Leverkusen, probably make a decision by the end of April. That would be my timeframe."
Leverkusen club chiefs have regularly insisted that their head coach will remain in charge at the BayArena for the foreseeable future, despite the sizeable interest from Liverpool and Bayern.
However, the club's sporting director Simon Rolfes recently admitted that the future is always uncertain.
“You never have 100 percent security,” Rolfes said. “Of course you have to prepare certain scenarios.”
