Well, that's it then. After 12 years, 492 appearances and eight trophies, Jordan Henderson has departed Liverpool.

Had you'd predicted that Liverpool's most successful captain of the Premier League era would suddenly up sticks for Saudi Arabia just a few weeks ago, you probably would've been laughed out of the pub.

But, the rebuild came and so did Saudi money... and now, here we are.

Both the manner and the destination of Henderson's move leave a complicated legacy, with many still unsure how and where his memory will sit once the dust has settled.

Henderson, for his part, thanked the club for everything over the last decade and beyond, promising to be a Red until the day he dies, in a club-produced goodbye video posted to his Instagram on Wednesday.

Though clearly sincere, even this part of the saga ended up being somewhat undermined by the fact that hours earlier footage of the midfielder already training with his new club in Croatia had leaked online.

However, when it came, the announcement of Henderson's exit drew a lot of love from the footballing world. Liverpool legends past and present replied to the post, including:

Virgil van Dijk: "Captain, leader, legend! ❤️"

You will forever be a legend to all Liverpool fans , but to me a legend and a best mate. Enjoy the next chapter mate. Love ya x"

And his new manager Steven Gerrard: "❤️❤️"

Even ex-Man Utd man Danny Welbeck admitted to welling up: "Incredible Bro 🤝❤️ Even brought a tear to a Manc 🥲🤣"

On Twitter, Robbie Fowler called Henderson a 'LFC Legend', while Trent Alexander-Arnold shared a personal message about the memories the two had shared:

The Premier League's official account also shared a compilation of the 33-year-old at his best.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's official channels finally confirmed Henderson's exit on Thursday afternoon, posting confirmation of the transfer as well as a tribute to the long-serving captain on their website.
