Liverpool vs Burnley preview: team news, lineups, TV, kick-off time, referee & VAR

After Sunday's 3-1 defeat away at Arsenal, Liverpool must pick themselves up and dust themselves off for the visit of Burnley to Anfield this Saturday.

After their 2-2 draw at home with Fulham on Saturday, Vincent Kompany's side sit second from bottom, with only Sheffield United in a worse position.

With just one win in their last seven games, Burnley, who will make the short trip from east Lancashire, will be massive underdogs at Anfield, which is expected to set a new attendance record.

Some 60,000 people could be inside the ground as the Anfield Road stand redevelopment reaches a new landmark.

So, what should we expect from the game? Here's our Liverpool-Burnley preview.

  • Date: Sunday 10 February 2024

  • Kick-off time: 15:00 GMT / 10:00 ET / 07:00 PT

  • Stadium: Anfield

  • Referee: Tim Robinson

  • Assistants: Eddie Smart, Nick Greenhalgh

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

Despite the relative proximity of these two teams, Liverpool and Burnley have only faced each other 70 times in official games.

As you might expect, Liverpool boast a superior record overall, winning over half of all meetings (40).

Burnley have won on 13 occasions, and the sides have drawn 17 times.

The Reds boast the superior record in the Premier League era, too, with the Reds winning 13 of their 17 clashes.

The Clarets have won just twice: 1-0 at Anfield in January 2021 and 2-0 at Turf Moor in August 2016.

Jurgen Klopp's side have won the last four meetings in a row without conceding a single goal.

LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS

Just as it appeared the Liverpool squad was getting back to full strength, new blows have arrived ahead of the Burnley game.

After his red card against Arsenal, Ibrahima Konate will serve a one-game suspension. Meanwhile, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to be out for the foreseeable future after a recurrence of his hamstring injury.

Wataru Endo could return, though, after Japan were eliminated from the Asian Cup, but this game is likely to come too soon for Mohamed Salah, despite stepping up his injury rehabilitation.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson remain on the comeback trail and could start, though the vice-captain's early withdrawal at the Emirates will have been a concern.

Likewise, Thiago will also be involved again, but only from the bench.

Long-term absentees Stefan Bajcetic, Joel Matip and Ben Doak remain sidelined, but Kostas Tsimikas could return within the next couple of weeks.

BURNLEY TEAM NEWS

For Vincent Kompany's side, Jordan Beyer, Hannes Delcroix and Charlie Taylor are all doubts after missing Saturday's 2-2 at home to Fulham.

Luca Koleosho and Nathan Redmond, meanwhile, remain long-term absentees.

However, there could be a space in the squad for deadline day recruits Maxime Esteve and Lorenz Assignon, who will be hoping to make their Burnley debuts.

PREDICTED LIVERPOOL LINEUP

On the back of an underwhelming defeat to Arsenal and several injury doubts, we could see Jurgen Klopp make multiple changes for the visit of Burnley.

One enforced change will come at centre-back, with Jarell Quansah expected to come in for the suspended Ibrahima Konate.

However, the biggest question marks surrounding Klopp's selection will be at full-back. Conor Bradley may come back into the team following his father's death, but it remains to be seen if the Northern Irishman is in the right state of mind.

It may also be time for Andrew Robertson to finally get a start. And depending on Trent Alexander-Arnold's fitness, this could see a switch for Joe Gomez to right-back.

In midfield, it may be too soon for Wataru Endo to start, but Harvey Elliott could come in for Ryan Gravenberch.

Up top, it wouldn't surprise if Darwin Nunez came straight back into the team.

PREDICTION

Having fallen to such a feeble defeat to their title rivals on Sunday, you'd expect a big reaction from Liverpool - especially as a record crowd is set to witness it.

With Burnley toiling towards the bottom of the table and Kompany's propensity to continue playing expansive football at all costs, you would expect the Reds to run out comfortable winners on Saturday. Eventually...
