Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold 'not fussed' about England role

Trent Alexander-Arnold says he’s “not fussed” about where he plays for England after scoring his third goal for his country during Monday’s 3-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina at St. James’ Park. 

The Liverpool man was heavily involved for the Three Lions, having more touches of the ball than any other of the England starters, and was named in the team as a midfielder by manager Gareth Southgate. 

One of three right backs in the squad, alongside Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier, Trent began the game as No.8 as Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa filled in at right back. 

However after a first half where England struggled to break down Sergej Barbarez’s side, Trent was moved back to his usual berth and it was from right back where he scored his 85th-minute goal. 

It was a textbook volley from a Jack Grealish cross, and one which might not have been possible had he remained stationed in the centre of midfield. 

Following the game neither Alexander-Arnold admitted that Southgate would like to see him in midfield, but the Champions League winner insists he is happy to do a job anywhere. 

"I have had a conversation with the manager and potentially that is where he sees me," the 25-year-old told BBC Radio 5 Live. 

"In my head I am not fussed at all, where I play. I just want to play as much football as I can over the summer. I think it was a positive night and it was a good one. A foundation laid and one to build on. After not playing for two weeks it was always bound to be a slow start.

"We built into it as a team and we found our feet in the second half. We made adjustments and penetrated through the lines - we can take a lot of positives. I love playing football and it was one I have been excited for. I was itching to get out there, I love playing for my country."

England face Serbia on June 16

Southgate was unwilling to elaborate too much about where he sees the 24-cap Liverpool man playing long-term. 

"We know his qualities,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “We don't need to go over too much of what we know. It is a beautiful finish - he made a difficult finish look very straight forward.”

England face Serbia in their first Euro 2024 group stage game on June 16. They play Iceland on Friday night at Wembley in their final warmup match before flying to Germany.
