Liverpool have rejected an offer from Southampton for Fabio Carvalho. Although, the club are open to offers for the talented playmaker.

As revealed by The Athletic's David Ornstein, South Coast outfit were interested in signing the 21-year-old in the January transfer window prior to joining Hull City on loan for the remainder of the 2023/24 season.

And after winning promotion back to the Premier League the Saints expressed an interest in Carvalho again and that has since been followed up with an approach to sign the midfielder permanently.

However, an offer worth up to £15m has been rejected by Liverpool.

In addition, the report states that whilst the Merseyside giants have no desire to let Carvalho depart on loan, if they are to consider selling, the fee required to force through a permanent sale must be considerably higher than Southampton’s opening offer.

Whether the Saints return with an improved offer remains to be seen but it's interesting to note that new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot anticipates utilising Carvalho next season, unless suitable proposals arrive, having been hugely impressed with the playmaker throughout pre-season.

Fabio Carvalho's future

This transfer development comes hot on the heels of Carvalho scoring against Arsenal in a pre-season friendly and following that up with another goal, this time to open the scoring in a 3-0 win for Liverpool against bitter rivals Manchester United.

Having impressed on a short-term loan with Hull last season, scoring nine goals in 20 appearances, the youngster's priority for the upcoming campaign is regular game time and there's no guarantee he will get that by staying at Anfield.

What may prove decisive is what position Slot plans to utilise the former Fulham man as using a 4-2-3-1 formation would certainly boost Carvalho's chances.

"We spoke and he told me to try and settle on the wing but obviously I know where I play best and I feel that is as a No.10," Carvalho said. I’m just going to do what he wants me to do and just work as hard as I can for him."
