Liverpool almost signed a surprise player before transfer deadline day and the club could return for him in the January window.

It wasn't a fruitful summer for Liverpool that many fans hoped in the end. The Reds made some smart acquisitions in the form of Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

However, Richard Hughes and his recruitment team also failed to address the gaping holes in the squad, including in the no.6 and the centre-back department.

This means Arne Slot will continue the season with his squad still vulnerable in certain areas.

But while Hughes may not have bolstered his options this summer, there was one player who the Reds were close to signing before the transfer deadline.

Liverpool almost signed Cesar Huerta before transfer deadline

According to ESPN there was one transfer Liverpool came 'very close' to completing a deal before transfer deadline day.

The club wanted to bring in 23-year-old Mexican winger Cesar Huerta before sending him out on loan to Sunderland.

However, despite coming close and striking an agreement with Cesar Huerta in the end, Sunderland thwarted the club's efforts with the Championship side pulling out of the deal to bring him to the club on loan.

ESPN states that this might not be the end of the road for Huerta and Liverpool and the Reds could potentially return for him in the January transfer window.

Huerta made 21 goal contributions from the wing in Mexico's top flight last season while playing 41 matches.

He's clearly a talented player with a lot of potential. It's clear Liverpool have eyed him up as a future prospective player for Arne Slot or potentially even an option for FSG's ambitions to build a multi-club model in the following years to come led by Michael Edwards.
