Thiago curse explains Liverpool's only loss of the season

Liverpool have had a very strong start to the season under new head coach Arne Slot, winning eight of their opening nine matches.

The Reds’ most recent win saw them become one of only seven sides in the UEFA Champion League to have won their opening two matches in the competition.

Even in games that the Reds haven’t dominated they have usually found a way to secure the victory and under Slot the team has become a defensive powerhouse.

Liverpool’s record this season isn’t perfect however, and the one loss they have recorded may now have been explained in a way no one was expecting.

The Thiago curse

Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool 1-0 when they visited Anfield in September, and this remains the Reds’ only loss of the season to date.

During that match, former Anfield favourite Thiago Alcantara was spotted in the stands and the 33-year-old even laid the praise on for Liverpool’s new midfield star Ryan Gravenberch.

Thiago hasn’t been spotted at a Liverpool game since, and the Reds have maintained a perfect winning record in his absence, but on Wednesday night Thiago went to watch another of his former teams and once again bought some bad luck.

Thiago brings bad luck to Bayern

Before he moved to Merseyside, Thiago was a Bayern Munich player. He won the Champions League and countless league titles with the club and on Wednesday he was present in the stands to support his former team.

Bayern Munich were in Birmingham to take on Aston Villa in their first Champions League home game for over 40 years. The home side emerged victorious after Jhon Duran scored the only goal in the 79th minute.

This means that both times Thiago has been present to watch a former team this season they have gone on to lose 1-0.

Now there are a lot of other factors that will have contributed to both losses and Thiago obviously shouldn’t be wholly blamed, but it is a big coincidence.

Thiago is remembered fondly by Liverpool supporters and will always be welcomed at Anfield, but some may want him to shake off his 1-0 curse before he comes to support Slot’s Reds again.
