Liverpool FC news recap: Van Dijk interview, Mantilla request & Ramsay recall

Here's our Liverpool FC news recap for Saturday, January 13th 2024. The Reds will recall Calvin Ramsay from Preston North End.

It is incredibly quiet at Anfield right now. Liverpool won't play again until January 21st (and you can see their next five fixtures here) and there's essentially no talk about imminent transfers.

Sven on Liverpool dream

Sven-Goran Eriksson has talked once again of his Liverpool regret after revealing his terminal cancer diagnosis. Former Reds star Luis Garcia has a proposal, though.

Despite all the success, Eriksson admits he still has a regret about his career. He grew up as a Liverpool fan and wishes he'd have had the opportunity to manage them.

That prompted many fans to propose the same thing, with former Liverpool player Luis Garcia amongst them - a legends' game.

Van Dijk would love Matip skill

Virgil van Dijk picked something from Joel Matip when asked what skill of a Liverpool teammate he'd love to call his own.

Virgil van Dijk gave an in-depth interview with France Football this week and one particularly interesting question asked for a trait of a Liverpool teammate that he'd love to have. It did require some thought, admittedly.

But eventually, Van Dijk settled on something he sees from Joel Matip that he'd 'love' to call his own.

"Not easy [to pick one]," said the Liverpool captain. "Maybe Joël Matip's dribbling. He loves dribbling from the back."

Liverpool ask about Mantilla

Liverpool have made contact over Colombian defender Kevin Mantilla. The Tallares club president has confirmed it.

Liverpool and Brighton are the two named clubs. Each wanted to know more about Mantilla, presumably as they increased their scouting of the player.

“It’s true, they have been following him for four months now. And they asked us for information about his physical records,” Fassi told La Voz.

Ramsay recall

It seems Calvin Ramsay will return to Liverpool this month, even if the Reds haven't formally announced it yet. That's according to Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe.

"We've got no information on it yet, but Liverpool are calling him back," he said, per the Lancashire Evening Post. "We are just waiting on them to officially announce it, but he has gone back to Liverpool, yeah."

Ramsay has played just twice this season, with only one start. Like many others, Liverpool will hope to find him regular football over the second half of the season.

Liverpool in battle for Yildiz

Liverpool are in the race for Kenan Yildiz and Juventus are having to take action to keep their wonderkid. It won't be an easy transfer for anyone to make.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Liverpool 'can't be ruled out' in the race for Kenan Yildiz. The youngster's future is going to dominate 2024 for Juventus, who will do whatever they can to hold onto the player.

They've already made one move, agreeing a new contract with Yildiz until 2027. But the suggestion here is that they'll offer him another one at the end of the season as a reward.
