Liverpool FC news recap: U18s score 7, Mo Salah update
Here's our Liverpool FC news recap for Saturday, 20th January 2024. The Reds celebrated an incredible win in the Youth Cup.
No, Liverpool haven't signed anyone in January and you can almost certainly give up on that one. That's if Jurgen Klopp is to be believed, anyway.
Instead, Saturday was about celebrating Liverpool Under 18s as they hammered Arsenal. Fabio Carvalho, too, gave the Reds a reason to smile with a Wednesday-night goal.
Plenty of interest, then, even without the transfer news. Here's our Liverpool FC news recap for Saturday.
Liverpool U18s 7-1 Arsenal U18s
Liverpool U18s smashed Arsenal in the Youth Cup on Saturday. The Reds ran out 7-1 winners thanks to three scorers.
Liverpool Under 18s tore their Arsenal counterparts to shreds on Saturday as they hosted the Londoners at Kirky. This one was 1-1 after 15 minutes but the Reds found rhythm (and then some) to dominate the game.
Lewis Koumas takes the headlines after bagging a hat trick. The young forward opened the scoring for the Reds and put them back in front just before halftime.

Klopp on sporting director
Jurgen Klopp has clarified how much influence he has as Liverpool make their big sporting decision this year. The boss also issues a January 'guarantee'.
Jurgen Klopp insists he has a minimal role in choosing Liverpool's sporting director. This comes as Jorg Schmadtke closes in on the end of his final transfer window in the role.
Schmadtke signed a one-year contract last year as Liverpool desperately tried to find someone to replace Julian Ward. Ward had been groomed for the role, taking over from long-term sporting director Michael Edwards in 2022. Only, he shocked everyone by stepping down a year ago, leaving the Reds short.
Schmadtke stepped out of retirement to fill the void but his one-year deal leaves things up in the air again.

Jurgen Klopp feels he's been proven correct with his controversial stance on recruitment. The Liverpool boss has never been the type to jump straight to a new signing, instead preferring to use his squad in more creative ways.
Unless a truly elite player is available, of course.
But it's been a true point of contention for fans, especially as Klopp will almost always prefer to trust a youngster than buy someone to fill a squad role.

Fabio Carvalho has finally ended his incredible goal drought with Hull City's winner against Sunderland. The Liverpool loanee needed that.
Fabio Carvalho has taken just two games to find a goal for Hull City. Carvalho left RB Leipzig this month and quickly returned to the Championship for a spell with the Tigers.
And the move looks to be paying off immediately. He started his second game for Hull on Thursday - an away trip to Sunderland, knowing that a win would leapfrog the Blackcats and move his new team into the playoff places.
That's exactly what happened and it was Carvalho who found the net.

Salah injury update
Mohamed Salah is expected to be unavailable for Egypt's final Africa Cup of Nations group stage game, as well as the last 16 tie – should they qualify – as he recovers from a muscle injury.
The winger pulled up with an apparent hamstring issue shortly before half-time during Egypt's 2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday and had to be substituted.
The incident caused alarm among both Egypt and Liverpool fans, though footage showing Salah walking comfortably through the mixed zone after the match provided optimism that the knock wasn't serious.
