Trent Alexander-Arnold will sit out the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Fulham and is set to miss 'a few weeks' of action with a knee injury, Pep Lijnders has revealed.

The Liverpool vice-captain suffered the issue in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Arsenal on Sunday, with the Reds' assistant manager detailing the extent of the injury ahead of Wednesday's semi final.

The news is the latest injury blow for Liverpool who currently have ten first-team players unavailable.

Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas near returns

In better fitness news, Lijnders also revealed that both left backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are nearing returns to team training, following their injury layoffs.

Robertson has been absent since the October international break when he dislocated his shoulder while playing for Scotland. The subsequent need for surgery meant an extended period on the sidelines, with the 29-year-old missing 19 Liverpool games so far.

Meanwhile, Robertson's backup, Tsimikas, suffered a broken collarbone during the Reds' Boxing Day draw against Arsenal.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, Lijnders said that both players could return to team training by the end of January – if all goes to plan.

Dominik Szoboszlai has claimed it won't take long before he makes his return to the pitch, after the hamstring injury he suffered against Newcastle.

The Liverpool No. 8 had to be substituted in the second half of the Reds' 4-2 win over Newcastle on New Year's Day, with Jurgen Klopp later revealing that that the midfielder would miss at least two games with the issue.

The 23-year-old has given his own brief update on his injury, while speaking at the at the ceremony during for Hungary’s Sportsperson of the Year 2023 – where he won the men's award.

Szoboszlai told M4 Sport: "I’m getting better. The first game of the year didn’t go as planned [for me], but it won’t take long and I’ll be back."
