Liverpool FC news recap: £30m transfer SWOOP, Klopp documentary and Slot's Gakpo VOW
Here’s our Liverpool FC news recap for Wednesday 14th August 2024. There are updates on Gakpo, Mamardashvili and that Klopp doc.
Slot promises different Gakpo
Arne Slot says things will be different at Liverpool for at least one player going forward. He won’t be doing things the way Jurgen Klopp did.
One of the great criticisms of Jurgen Klopp's use of Cody Gakpo was that he never really had a set position for him. Gakpo had thrived at PSV Eindhoven on the left but has never been there consistently for Liverpool.
In truth, that was partly because Liverpool's formation wasn't the same as PSV's. Klopp clearly felt Gakpo suited being a midfielder or a centre-forward just as much as he did a winger in his system and played him across all three positions.

Liverpool in documentary talks
There is some huge news regarding an upcoming Liverpool documentary.
In January, it was announced that a multi-episode documentary about the Merseyside giants was to be released after the 2023-24 season concluded, although a date for when the series would air had not been confirmed.
Of course, with the campaign being Jurgen Klopp's farewell, the series is set to capture the high and lows as the legendary German tactician prepared to bow out.

Reds place Mamardashvili bid
Liverpool are now waiting on a response from Valencia after bidding £30m this morning for one of their players.
Relovo claims Liverpool have now bid £30m for Giorgi Mamardashvili. A bid was expected this week after a flurry of rumours in recent days.
The Reds supposedly see Mamardashvili as a long-term successor to Alisson Becker, which makes this a particularly interesting transfer. For one, Alisson isn't going anywhere just yet.

Mamardashvili rejected Chelsea
Liverpool transfer target Giorgi Mamardashvili turned down a move to Chelsea this summer, Anfield Watch understands.
The Valencia shot-stopper caught the eye with his exploits between the sticks for Georgia during Euro 2024. He made an astonishing 11 saves in the 1-1 draw with Czechia, facing shots with an Expected Goals on Target total of four.
These performances didn’t go under the radar and Chelsea moved swiftly in an attempt to make him the latest goalkeeper to move to Stamford Bridge.

Slot's Gravenberch plans
As one door closes, another one opens. This could very well be the case at Liverpool for Ryan Gravenberch following Martin Zubimendi's transfer decision.
With the Spaniard rejecting a move to Anfield and the Reds potentially not targeting an alternative before the summer transfer window closes, new head coach Arne Slot will have to make use of the midfield options already at his disposal.
Wataru Endo is the most natural pick for the number six role given he is more defensive-minded, as is youngster Stefan Bajcetic but there's talk of him being loaned out for the season.
