Jurgen Klopp points out the major Liverpool failure vs Toulouse
Jurgen Klopp has pointed out the one major area where it all went wrong for Liverpool in their 3-2 defeat to Toulouse in the Europa League.
Liverpool were pretty awful in Toulouse on Thursday evening. The Reds just couldn't get things together, conceding three and seeing another disallowed for a foul.
Of course, they probably should have rescued it at the end, only for a Jarrel Quansah equaliser to be ruled out by VAR. It's understood that was an incorrect decision.
That doesn't excuse the performance, though, and Jurgen Klopp was quick to point that out afterwards. He talked about where things went wrong for his side - they didn't deserve to win, he says.
"It was well deserved to lose because they won pretty much all the decisive challenges, battles," he told reporters after the game. "We have too many situations where we should have won the ball but we didn't.
"On top of that we gave the ball away easily at least twice - one was a goal, the other I am not sure if it was an allowed goal or a disallowed goal. Counter-attack, third goal, last line too deep. Defending-wise it was just not good enough."
That's something we pointed out in our talking points. Liverpool just failed to win the ball time and time again. It was infuriating to watch - and did cost the Reds the game.
Naturally, giving the ball away for the first and third goals didn't exactly help either. But it was the lost duels that allowed Toulouse control of the fixture, even without the majority of possession.
It's something that will only increase calls for Liverpool to sign a defensive midfielder. Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister both started here - and they're the typical choices for the holding role - but both struggled badly to win the ball.
Klopp saw that and has voiced it. Now we wonder if change is coming.
