James Maddison makes 'replay' joke with Trent Alexander-Arnold on England duty

The never-ending controversy over Liverpool's defeat to Tottenham has continued on into international duty, it seems.

It's been over a week since the Reds' highly contentious loss in London, where two players were sent off, Luis Diaz's legitimate goal was ruled out and the PGMOL was made to release that audio footage, and still the fallout and debate rages on.

Jurgen Klopp stoked the flames last week by admitting he thinks there is precedent for a replay, but later walked back his comments by saying he was misinterpreted.

Meanwhile, the Premier League has admitted Diogo Jota shouldn't have been sent off, while the PGMOL has made changes to the VAR procedure.

As you might expect, with club rivals joining up as teammates on international duty this week, there has been the chance for some banter between club rivals over the hot topic.

Tottenham star James Maddison shared an image on his Instagram stories of himself alongside Liverpool's sole representative in the Three Lions' squad, Trent Alexander-Arnold, in the gym at St. George's Park, alongside the caption: "Still asking for a replay".

Clearly a light-hearted moment, the image – which may irritate – shows that at least the players can laugh about it now.

Speaking last week ahead of the victory over Union Saint-Gilloise Liverpool's vice-captain Alexander-Arnold insisted the squad had already moved on from the injustice of the Spurs defeat.

He said: "I think decisions are decisions, sometimes they go for you and sometimes they go against you. What happened on the weekend for us as players and as a team is very disappointing and frustrating. But, like I say, it's passed us. There is nothing we can do as players now; the game has gone.

"We have just got to move forward and put it past us. VAR is a system that is in place, and it is something we can't control as players. We've got to put our trust in the referees and the officials that use it and hope that they get the decisions right, and at times they don't and at times they do. We've just got to hope that they get the decisions right as much as possible."

Alexander-Arnold and England are set to play a friendly against Australia on 13 October, before taking on Italy in a Euro 2024 qualifier four days later.
