Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has given his thoughts on FSG putting the Reds up for sale.

Yesterday afternoon, David Ornstein of The Athletic broke the news that Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group, had put the club up for sale, prompting everyone in the footballing world to give their thoughts on the situation.

Speaking on Gary Neville's podcast The Overlapas cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said that he was surprised to hear the news.

"Fenway Sports Group have done a great job at Liverpool. They’ve never proclaimed to have the funds like Manchester United, Manchester City or Chelsea, but these are the owners who brought the Premier League back to Liverpool," Carragher said.

"They brought in Jurgen Klopp, Anfield and the training ground has been transformed, and they’re almost a model for teams like Arsenal who were in similar situations. I am surprised they’ve put the club up for sale.

"Maybe there is something in the fact that Liverpool have never been more attractive with the position they’re in, but we don’t know why they’ve done it now.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

At the end of the day, John Henry and FSG are businessmen and when you consider that they bought Liverpool for £300million in 2010, cashing in now would make a lot of sense.

The Reds have one of the most expensive squads in the world, no thanks to investment from the owners, and if they sell now the price of those players comes into account.

If early rumours are to be believed then Liverpool are currently valued at around £4.5billion, meaning if FSG do sell then they will make a very nice profit of £4.2billion, not a bad return for the American owners.

Hopefully the new owners can come in and take the Reds that extra step forward, something we couldn't do with FSG's lack of investment.
