In breaking news, Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have decided to put the Merseyside club up for sale.

This afternoon, David Ornstein of The Athletic broke some news that no Liverpool fan was expecting to hear today. The very reliable journalist claimed that the Reds' owners, Fenway Sports Group, have decided to put the club up for sale.

American investment agencies Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have reportedly been hired by FSG to assist with the process ahead.

To solidify the report even more, The Athletic received a statement from Fenway Sports Group that didn't deny that they were looking to sell the club.  Instead, they said that 'under the right terms and conditions' they would consider selling.

“There have been a number of recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at EPL clubs and inevitably we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool.

“FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.

“FSG remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

What a crazy start to the week. First, we draw Real Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 and then the owners we've had for over a decade make the decision to sell the club.

Even though FSG have been criticised for not investing their own money into the club, they have taken us from the brink of liquidation to one of the best teams in the world.

Yes, they could do more to help us compete on the pitch but their willingness to make Liverpool a European powerhouse again has been clear to see.

Expanding Anfield and making a state-of-the-art training centre are just a couple of the great accomplishments they have overseen.

Whoever buys Liverpool from FSG will have to be very rich as early estimates are claiming that the club could be sold for as much as €5-6billion.

Hopefully the new owners have some money left over to invest in the squad after paying that much.
