Darren England won't officiate Liverpool match again this season after VAR-gate

Darren England, who was the VAR during Liverpool's controversy-filled defeat to Tottenham, will not officiate another Liverpool match this season.

England now infamously failed to communicate the need to award Liverpool a goal after referee Simon Hooper incorrectly ruled Luis Diaz's 34th-minute strike out for offside on Saturday evening.

England seemingly misunderstood Hooper’s decision – thinking the goal had been given. After confirming that Diaz had been onside when Mohamed Salah's pass was played, England stated “check complete”, which the on-field referee assumed that meant the original call to disallow the goal had been correct.

The error led to an apology from refereeing body PGMOL, who admitted 'significant human error' had caused the blunder, while they also released the audio of conversations between England, his assistant Dan Cook and the other match officials on Tuesday.

The incident has led to much debate about the state of VAR and officiating, while Liverpool vowed to 'explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution' as they seek a review.

Though the club has not publicly pushed for a replay, Jurgen Klopp admitted he thinks the match should be played again.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League clash with Union Saint-Gilloise, he said: "They [the match officials] didn't do it on purpose and we shouldn't forget that. Yes, it was a mistake. An obvious mistake. I think there would have been solutions. I think the outcome should be a replay. Probably won't happen."

Meanwhile, England and Cook have been removed from this weekend’s fixtures in the Premier League, with Telegraph Sport reporting that the former will not officiate a Liverpool match again this season.

However, the report also claims that the 37-year-old 'retains the backing' of chief refereeing officer Howard Webb and will not be sacked.

It is said that the situation will be reviewed again ahead of matchday nine in the Premier League after the international break.

Referee Hooper has seemingly avoided any punishment and will be the VAR for Everton's clash aaginst Bournemouth this Saturday.
