Dejan Kulusevski claims both Liverpool's red cards were '100% fair'

Liverpool's disappointing loss to Tottenham Hotspur may now be a thing of the past, but the controversy surrounding the result certainly isn't, with Dejan Kulusevski the latest player to comment on the horrendous officiating.

When the Reds arrived in London to face Tottenham last month, everything was going wonderfully – the team was unbeaten, they had dropped just two points all season and goals were flowing.

However, as we all now know, this unbeaten run was brought to an end by, perhaps, the worst decision VAR has ever made since its inception.

Luis Diaz's perfectly legitimate goal in the first half was incorrectly ruled out for offside and a calamitous two minutes in the VAR room meant that the decision wasn't overturned, despite the officials knowing the decision was incorrect mere seconds after it was made.

The PMGOL apologised for the error and subsequently released the audio from the incident. However, the debate and fallout has continued, while Jurgen Klopp himself called for a replay as a fair resolution to an unprecedented mistake, in comments he later walked back.

Klopp's replay remarks have kept the incident at the forefront of public debate, while James Maddison and Trent Alexander-Arnold famously enjoyed some light-hearted banter about the contentious affair while on international duty.

Meanwhile, giving his verdict on one of the season's big talking points, Tottenham star Kulusevski has called the mistake 'just part of the game'.

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen, the Sweden international said of the incident: "I don’t think anything will happen. Mistakes happen in every game.

“It was just a mistake, and they were very angry that they got zero points even though they played a good game, and I understand them. [A replay] has probably never happened and I don’t think it will happen.

“There are so many mistakes every match, it’s absolutely insane. Sure, it was a big mistake in a top game and they were obviously very disappointed because it affected the game.

"But I can find mistakes in every match. So it’s part of the game and you move on."

The incorrect VAR call wasn't the only controversial moment in the game, with both of Liverpool's red cards (Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota) seemingly very harsh decisions that had massive influence on the Reds' eventual last-minute defeat.

Although, according to Kulusevski, both sendings off were completely justified.

He continued: "We played really well when it was 11 against 11. Then they got a lot better when they got a man sent off and we got a little worse.

“Then they got another man sent off. Both red cards were fair, 100 per cent.

"Then we had a hard time scoring a goal and in the last second, they scored an own goal. It was incredibly heavy for Liverpool and really important for us.”

Following the defeat, Liverpool dropped two points away from home against Brighton and are now sat in fourth place in the Premier League table on 17 points. While Tottenham capitalised on their situation, beating Luton to secure themselves at the top of the league with 20 points going into the international break.
