Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday saw the Reds return to the top of the Premier League table, even if it was only temporary.

This shows just how good Liverpool can be under their new head coach Arne Slot and the result was filled with standout performers.

Darwin Nunez scored on his return to the Reds’ starting XI, Luis Diaz increased his goal tally to five for the season with two goals in two minutes and Caoimhin Kelleher kept a clean sheet in Alisson’s absence.

Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk also put in a dominant performance, leading the Reds to their fourth clean sheet in five Premier League games and playing an almost flawless game.

Van Dijk’s true captain’s performance

Although his attacking contributions may have been overshadowed by his partner Ibrahima Konate, who provided an incredible assist for Diaz's first goal, Van Dijk had a perfect passing game.

The Reds’ captain completed 100% of his 45 attempted passes showing that, even at 33 years old, he is still absolutely at the top of his game.

As well as achieving a perfect passing record, Virgil was dominant in the air and has now won more aerial duels than any other defender in the Premier League, with 21. The next best is his partner Konate with 18.

Van Dijk’s future at Anfield

The Dutchman’s commanding performance against Bournemouth is just another reminder for Liverpool supporters of how good they have it with Van Dijk.

The skipper’s future at Anfield isn’t guaranteed though and this could be his last campaign in a Liverpool shirt.

Van Dijk’s contract expires at the end of the season and a number of clubs are said to be interested in snapping the iconic defender up on a free transfer.

Liverpool supporters will take some hope from reports that negotiations are set to begin soon. Virgil also hinted during the recent international break that he would be willing to extend his stay in Merseyside.

The defender’s dominant displays so far this season will fuel the desire of Liverpool supporters to see their captain stay put for years to come.
