Jamie Carragher retains hope for Anthony Gordon to Liverpool transfer
Anthony Gordon to Liverpool is a transfer rumour that simply refuses to go away as deadline day fast approaches.
The ex-Everton winger was linked with a return to Merseyside prior to the profit and sustainability rules deadline in June, but a combination of the Magpies' asking price and insistence on inserting Jarell Quansah into a swap deal, saw the Reds walk away from negotiations.
It was then revealed that a different swap deal involving Joe Gomez heading to St James' Park for £45m and Gordon going in the opposite direction for £75m was on the table, but ultimately did not materialise.
Of course, the Reds' rather frustrating summer window has been well documented following the rejection from Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. However, a deal for Gordon is something that interests club legend Jamie Carragher.
"The Anthony Gordon and Gomez one. I think that was maybe out of our hands and that was more of a Newcastle transfer in terms of the PSR," he told the Blood Red podcast.
"That was a transfer I would’ve liked to have seen go through and if there is still something in that between now and the end of the window, that is something I would be really interested in us doing, whether that is just Anthony Gordon or Joe Gomez being involved."
Gordon update
With time running out to get a deal done, not to mention Liverpool's depth at left-wing, it would appear that Gordon is staying at Newcastle this summer which will be much to the delight of manager Eddie Howe.
"No distractions. He's been really impressive [in training]. His focus has been on his work and his fitness, everything to do with this football club, nothing else," Howe said last week.
"I'm confident he is okay. We've had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He's always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle. He's such an important player for us."
