Xabi Alonso makes history and is now 2 games from all-time record

Xabi Alonso makes history as Bayer Leverkusen boss and is just two games from an all-time German record. He's strongly linked with Liverpool.

Xabi Alonso reportedly tops Liverpool's list as they search for Jurgen Klopp's successor this year. It doesn't exactly take a lot of research to figure out why.

Alonso has Bayer Leverkusen sitting at the top of the Bundesliga right now. They're also among the favourites to win both the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Europa League this season.

All of that is impressive, of course, but the manner in which Leverkusen are doing it takes things to another level. They haven't actually lost a game this season and their win over VFB Stuttgart on Tuesday took their run to 30 games unbeaten.

This is only the second time that's happened in German football history. Bayern Munich went 32 games unbeaten in the 2019/20 season under Hansi Flick, another supposed contender for the job at Anfield.

Alonso, then, is just two games from matching the all-time record - and with Leverkusen, rather than a dominant Bayern side.

What Alonso is doing right now is sensational. He took over a Leverkusen side that was second-bottom of the Bundesliga in 2022 and just 18 months later they're up their with the most dominant teams Germany have seen.

After all, it's not as though they're drawing games. Only four of the 30 have been drawn as Leverkusen continue to compete at the very top.

He's done this on a relatively small budget, certainly compared to Bayern, and rapidly, too. This is also Alonso's very first senior managerial role.

Essentially, everything about Alonso makes him an ideal candidate for Liverpool. He'd likely top the list even if he wasn't a former player for the club - and a truly exceptional one at that.

If Liverpool can appoint him this year, they'll be securing an incredible exciting successor to Klopp.
