Speaking in quotes published on Liverpoolfc.com, Nuñez said: “I’m really happy to wear number nine. And I’m very proud too.

“Honestly, previously other players represented this number really well and now it’s my turn to wear it. And I hope that everything goes well.

“I hope I’m able to represent it the best way just as the previous players did. And hopefully this is for many years and that it brings a lot of joy too.”

Nuñez wore 27 in his debut campaign at Liverpool, following his big-money move from Benfica. The striker scored 15 times in all competitions including nine in the Premier League.

In addition to Firmino, Nuñez follows on from several club legends to have donned the number 9, including Fernando Torres, Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush.

On the Liverpool club website it is noted that any fans who have already purchased a 'Darwin 27' shirt: "will be personally reimbursed by Nunez with a like-for-like exchange for a ‘Darwin 9’ shirt."
