Cody Gakpo had some nice words for Curtis Jones after his incredible performance for Liverpool against West Ham United.
Curtis Jones put in something of a star-making display against West Ham United on Wednesday evening. The midfielder popped up with two goals in the 5-1 win for Liverpool.
But 'popped up' is underselling it. These were two fantastic goals - goals that show off just how talented Jones really is.
The first saw him pick the ball up deep before playing it out wide and continuing his run through the middle. Darwin Nunez found him again with a pass in behind but at a very tight angle. Jones somehow finished from that angle, squeezing the ball in for Liverpool's second goal.
It's Jones's second that will be remembered, though. He showed confidence that he rarely shows, driving right at the heart of West Ham, taking players on and forcing his way into the penalty area. The goal felt like an inevitability from there.
This was Jones at his very best. Confident, technically brilliant and above all, a match-winner. There was no surprise to see him handed the Player of the Match award after the game.
Cody Gakpo, who also scored in the game, did the honours of handing over the award and had some nice words for his teammate.
"A quick word," said Gakpo. "You work really hard. Nobody sees it because it is behind closed doors, but you deserve all the best. Keep going brother!"
Will this be where Jones kicks on to another level? It's been asked before after a top display - but injuries usually get in the way.
Maybe this time it'll be different and he gets a bit of luck. And it's also worth pointing out that Jones's star-making displays haven't been this good before.
Fingers crossed, this was his moment.
