'We all fail' - Jurgen Klopp discusses psychological impact of Man Utd defeat

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his Liverpool players will have no issues bouncing back from Sunday's disappointing FA Cup quarter-final defeat to rivals Manchester United.

The Reds were on the wrong end of an FA Cup classic on Sunday at Old Trafford, with Man Utd scoring a 121st-minute winner to claim a 4-3 victory and passage to the semi-final at Wembley.

It was a rollercoaster ride from first minute to last in Manchester, with Liverpool conceding late goals in both regulation and extra time as the dream of a quadruple died.

The Reds can only have themselves to blame for some sloppy errors in their own half and wasteful finishing in the final third, but Jurgen Klopp has no doubts about the character of his players moving forward.

Asked about the whether the defeat would have a mental impact on his players, Klopp responded: "No. Wow, you lose a quarter-final in the FA Cup and if there was a mental drain it would be really difficult if we have to deal with human beings like that.

"We’ve played football for ages and you lose games – if that always leads to a mental state or situation where you need help... it’s just a normal thing. We all fail on a daily basis, maybe without even recognising it – we just get along with it.

"Today, if you don’t give all then it’s not mentally [draining], but you have to react on it and the rest is [something] we are used to unfortunately since we were kids that from time to time we lose a football game.

"I got the question already before, what kind of reaction I expect now? Nothing, they go to their countries and I hope they come back and have nothing [injuries] and then we think about Brighton when they come back and we know who can play again and that will be tricky enough.

"In general, the team is in an outstanding situation in the moment. That we got through all of these different, difficult situations is absolutely exceptional.

"For today, we could have won the game and we would have deserved it, but we lost it and Man United deserved it as well. That’s the situation."

Klopp's players will now travel the world during the March international break, with Liverpool not in action again until 31 March when they face Brighton at Anfield in the Premier League.

While their exit from the FA Cup is bitterly disappointing, Liverpool can now focus their attention solely on the league campaign and Europa League, with a Carabao Cup trophy already in the bag.
