"They’re in a better place" - John Barnes on Liverpool's Champions League hopes

Former Liverpool player John Barnes has given his verdict on the club's chances of having a solid run in the Champions League this season.

The Reds played in the European Cup final last campaign. However, Jurgen Klopp's side lost the match 1-0 to Real Madrid in Paris.

But, Barnes believes that Liverpool could have another solid run in the Champions League this season.

As quoted by AW's Twitter account, he told the Liverpool Echo the following: "They’re in a better place than most European clubs in terms of the squad they actually have. And it’s early days.

“Obviously you want all your players fit but they still have good enough players to perform well. So, I am not worried about them in the Champions League or the Premier League.

"Absolutely (Napoli will be tough opponents). Italian teams are always hard, physically. They’re normally very good defensively. What we’ve seen in the past, Liverpool playing against Inter Milan, playing against Napoli, that they’ve dealt with them.

"Obviously they’ve dealt with them when they’ve been playing well and playing confidently. So it’s gonna be, probably, a harder game (tonight away from home) than it would have been a few years ago because of the injuries that Liverpool have. But they have to get on with it, this is life.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We are confident that Liverpool can challenge for the Champions League title this season.

The Reds have been very good under Jurgen Klopp in Europe. Liverpool have played in three Champions League finals under the German (won one).

Therefore, hopefully the Reds can put together another solid run in Europe this season.

As Barnes pointed out, Klopp certainly possesses a squad which is capable of competing for the biggest trophy in club football.

But, only time will tell if that is to occur or not.
