"They didn't produce" - Steve Nicol on three Liverpool players against Real Madrid

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has taken aim at Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz for their performances in last Saturday's Champions League final against Real Madrid.

The Reds failed to find the back of the net against the Spanish giants at the Stade de France despite creating some very good chances. Jurgen Klopp's side registered nine shots on target.

Real Madrid on the other hand only secured two shots on target, but they did score (1-0 victory).

With that being the case, Nicol was critical of Salah, Mane and Diaz post-game.

He told ESPN (01:16): “The front three that we’re always talking about how good they are, well when it mattered most they didn’t produce.

"And that’s why Liverpool have lost because they spent 45 minutes in the Real Madrid half and if you do that, you expect your playmakers, goalscorers, they have to perform – and they didn’t.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We don't like to be critical of Salah, Mane and Diaz. The reality is, without those players, we would not have competed for the quadruple this season.

Salah (31 goals), Mane (23 goals) and Diaz (six goals) were all very good this campaign. So, we believe that Nicol's comments are a bit unfair.

Yes, Jurgen Klopp's forwards weren't at their best against Real Madrid, but they did try their best. Sometimes in football things don't go your way.

However, everyone is entitled to an opinion. On another note, we are absolutely loving the Klopp era.

Yes, the Reds lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid last Saturday night.

But, they have still claimed the European Cup, Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Premier League title, League Cup and FA Cup under the guidance of the German.
