"The real priority right now" - Fabrizio Romano on Naby Keita's future

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool are trying to extend Naby Keita's contract.

The club signed the midfielder from RB Leipzig for a transfer fee of £54 million back in the summer of 2018.

However, Keita has failed to make an impact at Anfield. The 27-year-old has only scored 11 goals and registered seven assists in 116 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.

Keita has struggled with injuries during his time at Liverpool, which is a key reason why the Anfield faithful are yet to see the best of him.

Despite that being the case, the club are looking to agree new terms with the midfielder, according to Romano.

As quoted by HITC, he told the Here We Go Podcast the following: “I wanted to clarify, many Liverpool fans have been asking me about (Gini) Wijnaldum rejoining Liverpool, but there’s nothing, sources tell me that this is fake news, the real priority right now is to extend the contract of Naby Keita. Let’s remind you that they’ve already signed Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez, but also Calvin Ramsay."

Keita is out of contract at the conclusion of next season.

Anfield Watch Verdict

Keita is a very good player. He found the back of the net 17 times and secured 15 assists in 70 appearances for RB Leipzig.

Also, Keita is only 27 years of age. So, his career is far from finished. Therefore, we would like to see Keita sign a new contract at Anfield.

Liverpool do possess an ageing midfield. Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are both above the age of 30.

So, it's important that Liverpool do have an eye to the future. There is no reason why Keita can't turn his Anfield career around.

We wish the Guinea international all the best ahead of the new season.
