Steven Gerrard explains the three things that made his Anfield return so special

Steven Gerrard rolled back the years on Saturday afternoon as he put on a show in Liverpool's annual Legends game.

Acting as the heartbeat in Liverpool's midfield - something the Anfield faithful was more than familiar with from his playing days - Gerrard played a vital part as the Reds came from 2-0 down to beat Ajax Legends 4-2.

Dictating play in front of a capacity crowd, Gerrard couldn't help express his glee at getting to live out his boyhood dream once again, donning the Liverpool colours under the Anfield lights.

On what makes the LFC Foundation games so special, Gerrard told the club's official website: "There’s three things.

"You want to come and play with your mates again. You obviously want to come for the cause, to help raise as much money. But the opportunity to play in front of these fans again, that’s the buzz.

"I was on the flight, I was like a big kid coming over. Six-and-a-half-hour flight, I couldn’t wait to get here. That’s what it’s all about.

"I know I’m only going to play in front of this crowd another couple of times maybe. That’s if I stay off the carbs and stay off the beers! I was just looking round at the end thinking to myself, ‘This is going to [happen] less and less so just savour every moment.’ It was brilliant."

The occasion would have been extra special for Gerrard due to the presence of Sven-Goran Eriksson, who got to live out his dream of managing in the Liverpool dugout.

Gerrard was of course part of England's 'golden generation', which played under the tutelage of Eriksson between 2001 and 2006.

The former Reds skipper added: "Sven being here today was very special; as soon as I knew he was going to be the gaffer today, I couldn’t wait to come and play for him one more time."
