Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez has given his thoughts on the club's defence ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.
In fact, Gomez believes that the aforementioned players create "the best collective group of centre-backs" in world football.
As quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter, he told the Liverpool Echo the following: “I do feel this is probably the best collective group of centre-backs around. We probably have THE best in Virg, and Joel and Ibou are unbelievable as they showed last season. We stand up well against any other team of centre-backs in the world.
“The whole energy within the camp is amazing and I wouldn’t choose any other people to be in competition with, in that environment and the atmosphere we have. It pushes us in the best way possible.
“What Virg has done is going to make him a legend at the club in world football. That’s the target. To aim high helps you achieve as much as you can. Ibou being even younger than me, it’s obvious we have time ahead of us.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Gomez does make a fair point. Liverpool are far from weak at the back.
But, things can change very quickly. During the 2020-21 campaign, there was a period where Van Dijk, Matip and Gomez were all out of action due to respective injuries.
Konate was not even at the club at this point. So, Klopp was relying on youngsters Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams to get the job done for Liverpool.
However, the German would be very unlucky if he faced a similar situation in his managerial career ever again.
Hopefully Liverpool's defence can stand up this season and help the club secure another trophy or two. Only time will tell if that is to be the case.
