Pep Lijnders could be about to help Liverpool make £100m transfer this summer

Liverpool's pursuit of a potential midfield target could be helped by Pep Lijnders who could be about to make an important transfer.

It's no secret Liverpool are pursuing a holding midfielder this summer. Arne Slot has run the rule on Wataru Endo in pre-season and the Liverpool head-coach has made it clear he does not see the Japanese midfielder as a viable option in that role.

We've seen makeshift experiments to trial out a number of different players in that position in pre-season. However, the best solution for Liverpool will be to enter the market in order to find the perfect candidate for Slot's system.

It's not an easy market to navigate with good holding midfielders are a rare commodity in the modern era. Although there are a few candidates who might just have what it takes to take on the role at Anfield.

How Red Bull Salzburg's sale of Mamady Diambou could impact Liverpool

One transfer that is currently on the agenda for Pep Lijnders at Red Bull Salzburg could lead to a domino effect, which could doubly impact Liverpool.

According to Africa Foot Salzburg are considering a sale for Diambou, who has been targeted by RC Lens and both West Ham United and Crystal Palace in England.

The latter is particularly interesting because on paper, Palace look well stocked in the holding midfield department. Cheick Doucoure has just returned from his long-term injury. Meanwhile, Adam Wharton is in the form of his life.

Spending more money on another holding midfielder would make little sense for Palace unless they are potentially considering a sale.

Why Diambou's transfer could aid Liverpool's Adam Wharton pursuit

Adam Wharton has been linked with a move to Anfield recently. The England international has been brilliant for club and country over the last six months and he seems to tick a lot of boxes for Liverpool.

On paper, based on what he has shown in Palace colours, he seems like a perfect candidate for Arne Slot's style of play. With Palace looking to reinforce their holding midfield options, it would suggest they are open to potentially considering offers for Wharton.

Wharton won't be cheap though. TNT has reported recently that the midfielder is valued around £100m - a hefty price and one that is moot whether the Reds would be willing to pay.

Nonetheless, if Lijnders does sell Diambou to Palace, Liverpool would certainly move a step closer to landing their ideal target.
