Liverpool transfers: Anthony Gordon hope after Nico Williams decision

Spain star Nico Williams has opted to remain at Athletic Bilbao for the upcoming season in a decision that could have far-reaching consequences across the transfer market.

Liverpool had been linked with the Euro 2024 winner but it was Barcelona who were the club who had the most interest.

They were desperate to add the 22-year-old to their attack as he could have paired up with Lamine Yamal, just like he did with Spain.

His decision to stay put though is set to have a chain reaction in the transfer market. That has already taken shape at Barcelona as they are keen to push through a deal for Dani Olmo.

However, he isn’t a natural winger so could they dip back into the market for a Liverpool star.

LUIS DIAZ LINKS COULD RESURFACE

Due to the fact that Barcelona are one of the biggest clubs in the world lots of players are linked with them and one rumour which has persistently appeared is a deal for Luis Diaz.

There have been plenty of reports of interest from both parties with Diaz’s father even suggesting it was a dream of his son to play for the club.

No official bid has come Liverpool’s way though as there was a focus on getting the Williams deal done from Barcelona.

Now that isn’t on the cards, barring a big U-turn, Hansi Flick could reignite interest in Diaz should he become available.

Liverpool aren’t actively looking to sell Diaz but if their asking price is met then Diaz could be on his way out. The Reds want a figure of around €60 million for the 27-year-old who joined back in 2022.

If Barcelona were willing to splash the cash on Williams then it should be available for Diaz, which could push Liverpool into action.

GORDON DEAL MAY BE BACK ON

One of the surprise rumours of the window so far happened a few weeks ago when former Everton forward Anthony Gordon was offered to The Reds.

No agreement was made between Newcastle and Liverpool as they asked for Jarell Quansah in the deal.

The idea of joining his boyhood club though may have turned Gordon’s head as his representatives tried their best to complete the move.

All hope may not be lost though for Gordon due to the decision from Williams to stay at Athletic Bilbao.

If an offer comes in for Diaz that Liverpool accept they are more than likely to seek a new forward.

So their attention may very well be back on Gordon who has impressed since joining Eddie Howe at Newcastle. Any deal would be reliant on Liverpool offering a lot of money for the homegrown talent.

However, that may not be a worry due to the potential Diaz sale, so Liverpool will have to wait patiently for a bid.

Should an offer not come in then it does seem unlikely Liverpool will make Gordon their third left winger.

Cody Gakpo looks like he will be a prominent option off the left competing with Diaz so there wouldn’t be a need for Gordon.

It is now a waiting game for several clubs as the butterfly effect could be in full flow should Barcelona make the first move.
