Liverpool's Trey Nyoni puts up impressive numbers on senior debut

Liverpool youngster Trey Nyoni put up some seriously impressive numbers on his senior debut this week. The 16-year-old looks special.

Trey Nyoni made his first ever senior appearance this week as Liverpool Under 21s took on Barrow in the Papa John's Trophy. The Reds would unfortunately lose the fixture 2-1 - but there were certainly reasons for fans to get excited.

One of those was Mateusz Musialowski scoring a sensational goal for the Reds. Anyone who's been following his developing career knows he's well capable of that, of course.

But 16-year-old Nyoni - a summer arrival from Leicester City - also managed to catch the eye. Nyoni started in midfield here, and his stats after the game were seriously impressive.

Nyoni won more tackles than anyone else on the pitch (4), while also winning five of six duels. It wasn't just a defensive display, either - the teenager created two chances with his passing.

It's all a lot more than you'd expect from a kid in his first senior match. Let alone one who hasn't even been in the Liverpool system for particularly long.

But Nyoni has quickly shown that he's one to watch. Despite his age, he's now in the Under 21s with the Reds, having made his first start with them against West Ham United at the weekend. Now he's showing he can hold his own against more mature players.

And so don't be surprised if Nyoni is a name you hear mentioned at first-team level before long. This year will likely come too soon but next season? At this rate, he'll almost certainly get a look-in during the Carabao Cup campaign.

Liverpool have certainly shown that youngsters get opportunities. Remaining in the first-team setup is another story - and one very few have managed - but Nyoni is already showing he's on the right path for an opportunity.

If this is what he can do on game no.1 at senior level, we can't wait to see what he does going forward.
