Liverpool are one of a host of elite European clubs keeping close tabs on Barcelona youngster Mikayil Faye amid reports suggesting the defender is unhappy in Catalonia.

The 19-year-old joined Barcelona for €1.5m from Croatian side NK Kustosija last summer and has gone on to play with the club's B team (Barca Atletic) over the past year.

He has performed admirably under the guidance of B team boss Rafael Marquez, but is yet to make his senior debut - despite the fact that he already has an international cap and goal for Senegal.

The left-footed defender, who can also play at full-back, has grown frustrated with his lack of opportunities at first-team level according to Mundo Deportivo and could seek a summer move as a result.

LIVERPOOL COULD TARGET BARCELONA DEFENDER

According to Spanish journalist Roger Torello, Liverpool are one of the top European clubs interested in signing Faye should he decide to call time on his Barcelona career.

The defender reportedly has 'proposals' from a number of clubs - including Liverpool - and is set to make a decision on his future in the coming weeks.

The Reds are not the only suitors, however, with Arsenal and Manchester United also keen in England, while Inter and Bayern Munich are named as candidates for his signature too.

Faye's contract doesn't expire until 2027 and Barcelona have already reportedly rejected an offer of €9m for him, with his impressive displays for Barca Atletic having seen his price tag increase significantly.

Whether Liverpool's interest is significant or in any way serious remains to be seen, but the Reds are targeting central defenders this summer, especially those capable of playing on the left-hand side of a centre-back partnership.

Lutsharel Geertruida has been linked with a reunion with former manager Arne Slot, while Goncalo Inacio is another high-profile name that has intrigued the Reds.
