Liverpool transfers: Reds in for electric £43m Johan Bakayoko

Liverpool are reportedly in for one of PSV Eindhoven’s star players. The Dutch team have stormed the Eredivisie this season.

Het Laatste Nieuws reports that Liverpool are one of several clubs interested in Johan Bakayoko. Only four clubs are named, however - Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Brentford also want the winger.

The feeling is that PSV Eindhoven would want a record fee for their winger, who has been one of their stars in a miraculous campaign. PSV have already clinched the Eredivisie title, nine points ahead of Arne Slot's Feyenoord.

But that's underselling it. PSV have scored an incredible 107 goals in 32 games, conceding just 19 times. Their team will face a tonne of interest as a result - and Bakayoko is a part of that.

PSV would apparently want at least £43m for the 21-year-old and likely more. They're looking to break their transfer record with a sale - that record is Cody Gakpo's departure to Liverpool.

And while Bakayoko hasn't quite reached the heights that Gakpo did, he's a couple of years younger than the former PSV captain. His efforts in recent weeks have been fantastic, too - goals in each of his last six games.

That's put him on 12 goals and nine assists in the Eredivisie. Good enough to jump to Liverpool?

Liverpool like Johan Bakayoko

Bakayoko is still young enough that he could actually be signed as Mohamed Salah's eventual successor. The Belgian plays on that side - a side where Liverpool don't really have a natural first-team winger beyond the Egyptian.

That's assuming Harvey Elliott's future is in midfield, anyway.

It should be said, though, that there's apparently a feeling in the Netherlands that Bakayoko isn't quite ready for an elite club. His ceiling could be that high, but HLN's article summarises various critiques of the player - and how he tends to do better against lower-table defenders.

Liverpool may not be too concerned about that, however, if the plan is to think long-term rather than immediate impact. Certainly, it's one to watch this summer.
