Liverpool transfers: Ex-Red urges move for Leroy Sane as Salah replacement

Liverpool are set for a transfer overhaul at the end of the season with considerable uncertainty currently swirling around many of their first-team stars.

Most pressing is the future of Mohamed Salah, the Reds’ talismanic 31-year-old forward whose contract expires in 2025

Approaching the last 12 months of his mammoth, £350,000 per week deal, there are no guarantees that the Egyptian will be offered fresh terms. That means if Liverpool are to cash in their chips on Salah, now would be the time to do it

Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad made a record-breaking approach for the Premier League and Champions League-winning forward during last summer’s transfer window but that interest was successfully fended off.

However, Salah’s form has dipped following a hamstring injury suffered at January’s Africa Cup of Nations, leading to speculation that a big bid from the SPL might now tempt the Merseysiders into selling

And should Salah leave after seven goal-laden seasons - where he’s finished top scorer each and every time - then a high-class replacement will be required.

Transfer links to Michael Olise have intensified since the Crystal Palace winger starred in the 4-0 demolition of Manchester United earlier this week and the France under-21 international is destined to be one of the most in-demand players of the upcoming transfer window.

However, one former Liverpool star believes the Reds need to seek a winger with more experience in order to adequately replace Salah.

Leroy Sane, the Bayern Munich attacker, is also out of contract in 2025 and so is in a similar position to Salah.

Should Bayern be unable to tie the Germany international to a new deal then it could well be time to say goodbye to the treble winner.

It’s been a topsy-turvy season for the 28-year-old, who ended a barren streak in front of goal - that stretched back to last October - against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg last week.

He’s also suffered from various injury issues as a disappointing Bayern season draws to a close.

Despite that, he’s still weighed in with 10 goals and 13 assists across all competitions this term for the Bavarians.

Pennant wants 'unreal' Sane at Liverpool

And ex-Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant believes the former Manchester City winger is precisely the type of player the club needs to be targeting instead of Olise should they lose Salah citing his recent Champions League performance against Arsenal.

“I don’t think Olise is an ideal replacement for Mo Salah,” Pennant said according to DAZN

“You need someone with more experience, like Leroy Sane. For me that would be a great signing, he has pace, he cuts in on his right or left. When he played at the Emirates, he was absolutely unreal, he tore Arsenal apart.

“So, if he can do that to Arsenal at the Emirates, he’d be an amazing signing. He knows the Premier League with City, so I’d rather Leroy than Olise, even though he’s a great player.”
