Liverpool transfers: Jorgensen, Patterson and the goalkeepers linked with a move

Liverpool are set for a major overhaul in the goalkeeper department this summer.

There are question marks over the future of undisputed No.1 Alisson Becker, with the Brazilian known to be ‘open’ to a switch to the Saudi Pro League

The 31-year-old is under contract at Anfield until 2027 and, as one of the world’s pre-eminent players in his position, it would take a sizable bid to dislodge him from Merseyside.

Caoimhin Kelleher, meanwhile, came close to leaving the club last summer. The Irishman has a clear desire to be a No.1 goalkeeper somewhere and, at 25, isn’t getting any younger.

He’s played over 25 times in a season for the first time in his Anfield career and has attracted interest from the likes of Celtic and Nottingham Forest.

Long-term third choice Adrian San Miguel also looks to be on his way having expressed his wish to return home to Spain, where he spent 15 years on the books of Real Betis.

Not only are there doubts over ALL THREE Liverpool senior goalkeepers, the coaching department is set to be shaken up too.

John Achterberg will leave after spending 15 years with the club and another member of his coaching staff in Jack Robinson is also on his way.

A potential candidate to emerge for the newly-available goalkeeping coach role is Jyri Nieminen, who has been working under Arne Slot at Feyenoord.

Here we look at some of the goalkeepers linked with a move to Liverpool ahead of the summer 2024 transfer window.

Filip Jorgensen - Villarreal

The Sweden-born Denmark under-21 international has fought his way up from the Villarreal youth ranks to take his place as the Yellow Submarine’s first-choice goalkeeper this season.

The 22-year-old works alongside former Liverpool No.1 Pepe Reina, who is remarkably still playing at the age of 41.

Jorgensen has been among the most impressive goalkeepers in LaLiga this season, with scouts from Liverpool, Juventus, Arsenal and Manchester City all taking note of his talents.

Contracted until 2027, Jorgensen could well be on the move this summer but would like assurances over his status as No.1 for his next club.

Anthony Patterson - Sunderland

Regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the Championship, homegrown Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson is on the radar of not only Liverpool, but other Premier League and second-tier sides.

Liverpool were thought to want to add the 24-year-old as a back-up for around £8 million but it’s been reported that the Black Cats want close to £15m for the England under-21 man.

However, complicating things is the interest of Sheffield United and Wolves, who could be both in the market for new No.1s this summer.

Patterson is under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2028.

James Trafford - Burnley

The Reds were reported to hold concrete interest in the Burnley goalie last month, with the England man having lost his place in Vincent Kompany’s lineup.

It’s been a tough season for the ex-Manchester City youth, who was tasked with performing behind one of the Premier League’s leakiest defences.

That said, the 21-year-old remains a player of considerable promise.

Trafford cost the Clarets an initial £15m in a surprise transfer from City last summer - a deal that could eventually reach £19m including add-ons.

The Carlisle-born shot stopper is under contract at Turf Moor until 2027 and previously impressed on loan at Bolton Wanderers during the 2022-23 season.

Alex McCarthy - Southampton

It’s been reported in recent days that Liverpool have again got their eye on Alex McCarthy, the 34-year-old who is just about to leave Southampton at the end of his contract.

McCarthy was first linked with Liverpool back in 2014, while still at Reading, but he opted for a move to Queens Park Rangers instead.

He was again touted for a Merseyside transfer in 2019 when Simon Mignolet left but no deal materialised.

However, it could be third time lucky for Liverpool as they seek an experienced recruit to cover for the departing Adrian.

The Reds will face competition from Celtic and Newcastle for McCarthy, while there are also teams in Saudi Arabia said to be interested.
