Liverpool transfers: 32-year-old waiting on medical to leave Reds

Liverpool are set to lose an eight-year veteran of the team in the summer transfer window. Only a medical separates him from an exit.

Turkish outlet Sabah claims Joel Matip has been offered to Fenerbahce by his agents. The defender is out of contract at the end of the season and, according to this report, Liverpool won’t be offering him a new one.

That opens the door to an exit, with Fenerbahce interested in signing him. There is, however, an obvious hang-up before any deal can happen.

Matip has been injured for months now with an ACL tear and isn’t expected to play again this season. He should be fit again by June but everyone needs to wait on a medical report before guaranteeing that.

Which leaves Fenerbahce needing to see results of a report before actually pushing forward with an offer for Matip. While it’s widely expected he is to leave Liverpool with the end of his contract, everything else is dependant on his fitness.

Joel Matip to leave Liverpool

It’s a sad exit for Matip - and a thoroughly undeserved one. We do think he’ll leave, given his age and uncertainty over his long-term fitness, but it really shouldn’t be like this.

Matip has been a wonderful servant under Jurgen Klopp - one of his first signings and on a free transfer, too. There haven’t been many better and arguably no signing better for money.

The change of manager, though, surely cements the exit. We wonder what would happen if Matip was willing to sign a new contract on very reduced terms, but we’re also not sure he needs to do that.

Matip’s quality over the last eight seasons has been high enough that plenty of sides will want to take a chance on him, should he prove his fitness. He deserves a good move and, hopefully, he can secure one.
