Joe Gomez 'committed' to Liverpool despite interest from FIVE EPL clubs

Despite being Liverpool's longest-serving player, what the future holds for versatile defender Joe Gomez remains up in the air.

Rumours of a potential departure have been circulating, particularly with Newcastle’s keen interest in a deal last month that would have seen Anthony Gordon go the other way.

However, despite a mooted £45 million offer from the Magpies, discussions never progressed to the point of Gomez speaking to the Tyneside club.

Now, Paul Joyce from The Times reports that the 27-year-old, who recently reported back to the AXA Training Centre alongside teammates such as Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is set to stay at Liverpool under new head coach Arne Slot.

The report says that Gomez "remains committed to Liverpool" and aims to emerge as a key player under Slot.

Despite this, there is considerable interest in the Londoner this summer, including from five Premier League teams.

In addition to Newcastle, a report from HITC has highlighted the interest from other clubs, including Aston Villa, who can offer Champions League football, and a trio of London clubs: West Ham United, Brentford and Crystal Palace.

This interest reflects Gomez’s impressive performance last season, where he made 51 appearances and provided three assists across all competitions.

Competition for places

Despite this, Liverpool appear to have no intention of letting Gomez go easily. The club, which signed him from Charlton Athletic for just £4.2 million in 2015, is looking for a significant return on their investment, with a hoped-for tenfold profit of around £45 million.

Gomez's loyalty to Liverpool has been consistent over his nine-year tenure at the club, amassing 224 appearances and overcoming significant challenges, including a severe knee injury in late 2020.

His resilience and versatility have made him an invaluable asset, capable of playing across the backline, and he was notably included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024, though he remained an unused substitute.

Despite his commitment, Gomez faces stiff competition for a starting spot. With Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate ahead of him in the pecking order at centre-back, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley, Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas the first-choice full-backs, Gomez's expected role in the upcoming season is uncertain.

For now, though, the defender is focused on readying himself for the new season, but a move away could be best for all parties - especially if the Reds' valuation is met.
