Joao Neves’ future has become a lot clearer in recent days with the news that the Benfica star has given a green light to a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Neves, 19, was named last week as a Liverpool transfer priority by Correio da Manha in Portugal with Chelsea and Manchester United also listed among the midfielder’s suitors.

It was reported that the Reds were preparing a proposal for Benfica’s consideration with Neves’ buyout clause set at a prohibitive €120 million.

The Portuguese giants knocked back two €60m bids for Neves earlier this summer according to the report with the Reds requiring sales before being able to complete a deal of that magnitude.

The likes of Tyler Morton, Sepp van den Berg and Caoimhin Kelleher are among the players available for sale at Anfield this summer with the club yet to complete any significant incoming business.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now delivered a significant transfer blow to the Reds, confirming that Neves has expressed his wish to move to the French capital.

“Paris Saint-Germain are ready to advance in talks with Benfica for João Neves after player’s green light,” the transfer expert wrote on X, formerly Twitter

“João wants the move, PSG believe they are ahead of Premier League clubs; talks taking place with Benfica. No club-to-club agreement yet but negotiations continue.”

Liverpool require reinforcements

PSG head coach Luis Enrique reportedly sees Neves as the ideal midfield partner for Portugal international teammate Vitinha as the Ligue 1 giants seek to assemble a squad in the post-Kylian Mbappe era.

Neves is under contract at Benfica until 2028, having clinched a renewal last year, but has resisted attempts to extend his stay on the part of the club this summer.

Last season he played 55 times for Benfica, including six matches in the Champions League, and also featured for Roberto Martinez’s Portugal team at Euro 2024.

Liverpool are reported to be in the market for a midfielder this summer having lost Thiago Alcantara and requiring an additional No.6.

Wataru Endo was the club’s only natural defensive midfield option towards the end of the campaign, with Alexis Mac Allister also filling in at times.
