Jamie Carragher REVEALS why Liverpool haven't signed players

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed why he thinks the club are yet to make any signings in the transfer window so far this summer.

While Arne Slot's has a strong squad to choose from, Liverpool are in the market for reinforcements in defence and midfield if the right players become available – and are set to announce the addition of Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili ahead of a loan back to Spain before the window closes.

After the Brentford win on Sunday, Carragher shared that there could be a hidden reason behind the lack of major incomings this summer

Speaking on Sky Sports, the Liverpool legend said that he thinks the club could already be focusing their attention on NEXT season when it comes to transfers.

"In the past under Jürgen Klopp, they [Liverpool] always worked twelve months in advance," he said. "They were always thinking not about this window, it was next window.

"So they've come in late, they've had to bed a manager in, they've obviously got this problem in terms of the contracts that they will have to fix like you said before Christmas. But the reason why Liverpool I don't think are buying players right now is they're probably already thinking about next summer," he added.

"That might sound ridiculous, but Liverpool – in the last five to 10 years – haven’t panicked in the transfer market and I love that about Liverpool."

CONTRACT WORRIES

One of the major concerns for both Sporting Director Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards this summer is the situation surrounding the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. All three stars are out of contract at the end of the season and would be free to talk to other clubs in January.

Given that FSG (Fenway Sports Group) have been reluctant to offer contracts to players over the age the 30, fans have concerns over the futures of van Dijk and Salah in particular and both are being linked with lucrative moves to Saudi Arabia.

As for Alexander-Arnold, links to Real Madrid have been rampant all summer, although recent reports have suggested that whilst a new contract for the full-back is a high priority for the club, they are calm over the 25-year-old's future.

Slot has been coy when asked about contracts in recent weeks, but did provide an update in an interview with Carragher ahead of the Brentford game on Sunday.

"The only thing I have to do - what I do with all of them - is to bring the best out of them, and if we bring the best out of them, and they perform really well, then it’s up to them if they want to sign, it’s up to the club and us if we give them a new contract," the Dutchman said.

"But the best thing for all of them is, if you’re out of contract or not, get the best performances as possible, and the areas where I should and will help them together with my staff, to bring the best out of them, and until now, it’s nothing but positive.

"Mo came back really strong in terms of physique, Virgil came back really strong, Trent did the same, and they brought in good performances against Ipswich, which was only the first game, like all the others."
