Liverpool transfers: Szoboszlai succession plan takes shape after Arne Slot criticism

Ahead of Liverpool's opening Champions League game of the season, at San Siro against AC Milan, Arne Slot requested that Dominik Szoboszlai get his numbers up.

While the Hungary captain works hard in midfield and stitches together his team's play effectively, it's been a criticism levelled against him throughout his time at the club.

Szoboszlai cost £60 million when signing for the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2023 but hasn't been able to put up the goals and assists that many would expect from an attacking midfielder who cost that much money.

The 23-year-old has only been credited with eight goals and seven assists since arriving at the club, although he did manage a goal in the Milan game in question.

However it's now emerged that Liverpool are looking for an alternative solution in attacking midfield with Crystal Palace's No.10 Eberechi Eze named as a target in a new report.

Liverpool want Eze for attacking midfield role

The England man played 90 minutes against Liverpool for Palace last weekend as Diogo Jota's goal decided the tie in the Merseysiders' favour. Szoboszlai was rested for the occasion but came on at half-time due to an injury scare suffered by Alexis Mac Allister.

Capable of playing on the left wing, Eze has mostly starred in a central role for the Eagles under Oliver Glasner.

The South London side are struggling in the Premier League this season - without a win after seven matches - but Eze has been integral to their attacking play thus far.

Eze is their creative fulcrum and has 29 goals and 15 assists in the Premier League since signing from Queens Park Rangers in 2020.

Now Football Insider is reporting that Liverpool have got Eze on their list of potential replacements for Szoboszlai.

The report states that Liverpool analysts see Eze as a more 'creative' player than Szoboszlai who has also got a better end product.

Eze, 26, signed a contract extension with Palace in November 2023 with his current terms now extending to 2027. Accordingly he wouldn't come cheap.

Szoboszlai meanwhile is under contract with Liverpool until 2028.
