Chelsea 'make contact' with Liverpool over SHOCK move for Joe Gomez
As if they haven't been busy enough in the market since Todd Boehly took ownership of the club, it seems Chelsea are still not done this summer transfer window.
Chelsea have already bolstered their defence with the signing of Tosin Adarabioyo following the departure of veteran centre-back Thiago Silva. However, with Trevoh Chalobah potentially on his way out, Chelsea are reportedly exploring further options.
According to fresh reports from Si Phillips, the West Londoners have enquired about the availability of Liverpool's Joe Gomez.
Gomez open to an exit
Gomez, who has always found it difficult to secure regular playing time at Liverpool, is open to a move but is in no rush to leave Merseyside.
According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle United and Aston Villa have shown interest in the England international, though no concrete offers have been made.
The 26-year-old defender was notably left out of Liverpool's opening matchday squad for the Premier League game against Ipswich Town, suggesting that he may be surplus to requirements under manager Arne Slot.
Now, according to Phillips, a Liverpool source confirmed that Chelsea have "recently made contact with defender Joe Gomez about a potential move this summer".
The journalist added that Chelsea have also approached Gomez's agents to gauge the player's interest in the switch, which has been met positively.
Same agent as Enzo Maresca
Any approach for Gomez could potentially be eased by the fact that the Liverpool defender and Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca share an agent.
That said, any move is expected to depend on the departure of Chalobah and possibly another centre-back.
“At this point, it is Chelsea finding out the full financial conditions of any deal and whether they can make it happen or not," Phillips continues.
"Nothing has yet advanced past that at the time of writing this, but we know how fast things can move."
Despite the surprise from some Chelsea supporters regarding the pursuit of a player who has been primarily a backup at a rival club, Gomez has been on Chelsea’s radar since the club's new ownership took over.
