David Ornstein says fans should NOT expect player at Liverpool next season

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has told fans not to expect Anthony Gordon to be at Liverpool next season. The Reds have been linked with a move.

There was a surprising report this week as the Express claimed Liverpool have their eyes on Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon. Now, that they'd be interested in a player performing that well isn't a surprise.

But Gordon is a former Everton player, of course. He broke through there after being released by Liverpool when he was 11 and was their standout performer for a while.

Then came a move to Newcastle and one that didn't exactly endear him to blues. His form now has him in the Reds' sights again - but fans shouldn't get their hopes up.

David Ornstein was asked about the interest as he did a Q+A for the Athletic. He admits Liverpool really like Gordon, though the player almost certainly won't move anywhere in 2024.

"Liverpool (like Manchester City and many others clubs) really like Gordon," said Ornstein. "But they are not expected to pursue the winger because Newcastle have no intention of letting him go and, even if that stance was changeable, the potential level of fee it would take to do business would be astronomical.

"I'm certain Gordon is staying at Newcastle this summer."

Anthony Gordon to Liverpool?

Not one anyone should get their hopes up for, then. Even though the idea of having another Scouser in the squad is an exciting one, and Gordon's form this season makes him look like a true star in the making.

Newcastle, though, are not an easy time to buy from. While they might sell one or two players, they're highly unlikely to let an English, homegrown player depart to a team they're hoping to compete with.

Liverpool, then, will have to look elsewhere this summer if they want a new wide player.
