Liverpool transfers: Anthony Gordon DESPERATE to revive Anfield move

Liverpool failed in their attempts to land Anthony Gordon earlier this summer when Newcastle were struggling to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability regulations.

In the days before the June 30 PSR deadline, the Magpies made contact with Liverpool in order to ascertain their interest in acquiring the services of Gordon, a player who had been with the Reds as a boy until the age of 11

Owing to Newcastle’s demands - said to be a package of £100 million - and the selling club’s desire to insert Jarell Quansah into the deal, the move went nowhere.

Subsequently, Elliott Anderson moved to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh left for Brighton, meaning Newcastle’ financial fair play fears were eased for the summer.

The North East club are now said to be optimistic about keeping Gordon as well as other top stars such as Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes at the club through this transfer window.

However, it’s now been revealed by the Telegraph that Gordon TOLD his England teammates at Euro 2024 that a move to Liverpool was going to happen.

Furthermore, the report claims that Gordon’s representatives ‘were desperately trying to revive’ the move in the days after it fell apart.

Club sources feared that the 23-year-old’s head had been turned by the interest but now Eddie Howe - Newcastle’s manager - has revealed he has spoken to the former Everton star and is ready to welcome him back to St. James’ Park after his post-Euro 2024 holiday.

“I would welcome him back with three arms if I had them,” the Englishman said. “He’s such an important player for us, we didn’t want to lose anybody.

“Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions. In those last few weeks [of June] it was very, very difficult. The rules forced us to do things we didn’t want to do, we didn’t want to lose any of the players sold.

“It was a really difficult time, a lot of uncertainty. Anthony is an integral part of what we’re doing. He needs a bit of a break, he’s had a really long season and the Euros will have been emotional for him as well.

“I’m confident he is ok. I think you can only judge Anthony on what he has given Newcastle on the pitch. He’s been committed.

“We’ve had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle and I want to make that clear to all our supporters. By the time he comes back he’ll be ready to go.”

Newcastle signed Gordon from Everton in January 2023 for £45m, and have got the winger contracted until 2026.

Last season he scored 11 goals and added 10 assists in the Premier League.
