Journalist believes it’s now LIKELY Liverpool sign Lutsharel Geertruida
One Dutch journalist now believes it’s likely that Liverpool sign one of Feyenoord’s current stars. Arne Slot will want him at Anfield.
It’s very common, of course, that managers look to bring in players they know when they arrive at a new club. Managers like to have players who are already a fit with their ideas, after all, as well as characters they know inside out.
Arne Slot may well be of that mind, and at least one Dutch journalist believes he’ll try to bring a Feyenoord star with him. Lutsharel Geertruida is the tip - a 23-year-old, versatile defensive player.
Marcel van der Kraal of De Telegraaf suggested this week that Geertruida is actually a likely signing for the Reds. He put the chances at ‘greater than 50%’ ahead of the summer.
"I think the chance of Geertruida going there is greater than fifty percent," says Van der Kraan. "He is on the radar and has done fantastically in the Dutch national team and in the Champions League, it is a boy who physically fits the best with the Premier League of all Feyenoord players."
There’s some confidence here, then. Van der Kraal also suggested a transfer fee - around €30m. He points out that Feyenoord rejected around €25m from RB Leipzig last summer, and his efforts this season will have pushed the price up.
Liverpool and Geertruida
Geertruida is an interesting idea. He’s still only 23, knows Slot’s system and above all, covers at least three positions. He’s started games at right-back, left-back and centre-back this season. The Dutchman has been known to play defensive midfield, too.
That kind of versatility can be invaluable, as Liverpool know. James Milner filled that role for along time, while Joe Gomez has been the one to move around this season.
Geertruida, then, does make some sense as Slot attempts to build his first squad. No one should be surprised to see his name on the shortlist this summer.
