Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing the Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon this summer.

The 23-year-old only moved to St. James’ Park at the start of 2023, following an acrimonious exit from Everton.

England international Gordon suffered through a period of poor form at the start of his Newcastle career, with many questioning the Magpies’ decision to spend £45 million on him.

However, Gordon has proven the doubters wrong throughout a solid 2023/24, even though Newcastle haven’t been at their best.

Now the reigning Newcastle player of the season, Gordon has also forced his way into the reckoning for the England Euro 2024 squad having made his debut against Brazil in March.

His output this term has been terrific, becoming an ever-present for the north east club in their first Champions League campaign for 20 years as they bowed out in the group stages.

Gordon has netted Premier League goals against ALL of the so-called Big Six - a cohort that includes Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham. He is only the second player to achieve that feat, following Jamie Vardy in 2017/18.

Gordon joins illustrious Premier League club

He was most recently on target in the Newcastle defeat to Man Utd at Old Trafford on Wednesday night and should well have been given a penalty in the game.

The forward has also delivered further assists against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

In total he has got 21 goal contributions from 35 Premier League games - a total that includes 11 goals and 10 assists with one game still to go.

Those contributions place him in exalted company this season, being one of only FOUR Premier League players to reach double figures for goals and assists this season.

Doing so in a Newcastle team that has struggled for form is all the more impressive.

The only other players on the list are Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins (19 goals and 13 assists), Chelsea star Cole Palmer (22 goals and 10 assists) and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (18 goals and 10 assists).

He has proven to be robust too, starting 34 league games and only missing out when he’s been suspended.

Will Newcastle be forced to sell?

Newcastle could well find themselves requiring player sales this summer with FFP compliance to adhere to.

It’s been suggested that Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak could both depart with teams like Manchester City and Arsenal linked.

However, amid Liverpool’s reported interest in Gordon, they could end up selling the former Reds’ academy player as well.

Having been let go by Liverpool aged 11, Gordon could be set for a high-profile comeback to his boyhood favourites with a fee in the region of £100 million discussed for a player out of contract in 2026.
